ATTENTION Frederick County Horse People!

A MESSAGE FROM THE MARYLAND HORSE COUNCIL

Dear Frederick County Horse People:

Do you ride outdoors October through mid-January?

If you do not ride outdoors from October through the middle of January, or if you believe that deer hunting will not affect you, you can stop reading.

If you do ride outside in the autumn and early winter, then these are the things you want to know:
...
Currently, Frederick County allows deer hunting on 4 Sundays during October bow season and the first two Sundays of Firearm Season.

There are two bills pending in the state legislature in Annapolis that would expand those allowable Sundays to all Sundays from the beginning of October until mid-January (bow and firearm as appropriate), on private and public land - and these bills look poised to pass without a very strong grassroots effort by the voters in these three counties.

Frederick County was amended onto a bill for Western Maryland after the legislation session started. None of your Frederick County elected officials formally asked other recreational users in Frederick County (horse back riders, hikers, bikers, bird watchers, etc.) if there was support for this. They just did it.

If this concerns you at all, then you need to reach out to important legislators (see links below) immediately to tell them to stop expanding Sunday Hunting in your county, that you do not support it.

Quick Facts:
•The Maryland Horse Council supports aggressive methods to reduce the deer population (including but not limited to extending the season, increasing bag limits and enabling the commercial sale of wild venison), but MHC does not support hunting on Sundays.
•Maryland Horse Council has secured a commitment from DNR Secretary Gill to do a study later this year to assess the effectiveness of various means of reducing the deer herd as well as the impact of Sunday hunting on communities.
•MHC will work with Farm Bureau and allied organizations to ensure that this study considers proposals such as: legalizing the sale of venison, extending the season, promoting the use of crop damage hunting permits, facilitating more managed hunts, and requiring hunters to take doe to earn the right to hunt buck.
•DNR statistics DO NOT demonstrate a significant deer herd reduction from Sunday hunting. Deer are killed on Sundays, but fewer are killed on the other six days of the week.
•Property lines do not separate hunters from non-hunters in the woods of rural Frederick County. Safe Sundays have always given us a time when the countryside is safe in the fall. Don't let them take that away from us.

Contact ALL members of the Senate & House Committees NOW. Simply tell them to oppose Sunday Hunting in Frederick County. Let us complete the study on its impact. The MHC website has all the contact info listed.

If you want to reach out specifically to the Frederick County delegation to let them know that you are unhappy that they added Frederick County onto another bill without discussing it with the community, you can contract them directly with the information below.
